I would put the actual value of "lost" sales well below your estimate. The main reason for my lower number would be the lower marginal benefit an iPod owner would receive for each song purchase that exceeded the 40% memory mark (for example). In order to capture those sales, iTunes would have to drop its prices or find a new revenue stream (subscription service, for example). Neither have happened, and neither are likely to happen. Or labels could drop wholesale prices, which is unlikely. That leaves it to labels to create enough demand to get people to buy more. Then one has to ask if the benefits of the additional sales merits the increased marketing expenditures. Maybe not, right?

If there's unconsummated transactions out there, I would guess they other items, like ringtones or bundled products.

It would be VERY insteresting to actually survey what happen to all those empty spaces?

obviously the missing space is huge.

my take.
1. empty spaces. Most is indeed empty, unused space.
2. small number of iTune purchase
3. old collection cd rip.
4. Downloaded. (This is the gold mind. what, where and how?)

from my personal collection No.4 is almost 80% of songs. (But I run an mp3 blog.)
